Are Millennials Buying Homes for Their Children or for Their Dogs?

They love their dogs! It seems that more and more millennials are postponing having children for various reasons. According to research, 27 percent of millennial women have a bachelor’s degree, compared with 14 percent of boomers and 20 percent of Gen-Xer. That same research shows that the young college educated are more concerned about the environment, global warming, nature, and pet rescue says the author of The Dogs of Avalon: The Race to Save Animals in Peril.

Dogs have now become an integral part of the millennials’ family as they are postponing having children for their careers just as they’ve postponed marriage for the same reason. Though more and more millennials are having children, let’s face it, a dog is simply cheaper than children. Until they can save up for the condo or house with a yard for Trooper, a dog is more affordable and provides lots of unconditional love.

Realtors find that one of the first questions is, “does that house or condo have at least a small yard for my dog?” It seems to be a deal-breaker!

What Home-Buying Dog Owners Should Know

If you’ve rented, you know that property managers have lots of restrictions, presuming they will even allow you to rent at all with a pet.

But buyer beware: If you’re purchasing a condo or an apartment just to have a small yard, Home Ownership Associations can present some rules such as weight limits so be sure that doesn’t affect your dog breed (sometimes as low as 25 pounds). Also, disclose to your home insurance company to be sure they don’t deny you or impose an extra charge if they consider your pet as a “dangerous “ breed. If not, buy your home and continue loving your dog!
